Do Not Love the World

Reading: 1 John 2:15-16 -- A warning against loving the sinful world system that stands in opposition to God, including the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life.
Devotional: John is not warning believers to despise the created world or the people in it. He is warning against forming a deep affection for the system of godlessness that runs beneath the surface of ordinary life -- the pull toward sensual pleasure, the corruption that comes through what the eyes linger on, and the arrogance that forgets we are entirely dependent on God for everything we have. These are not abstract dangers. They show up in the television you watch without thinking, the purchases you make without praying, and the credit you take for what God has done. When the world begins to feel more satisfying than fellowship with God, that is the warning sign John is pointing to.
Reflection Questions:
  • Where in your daily life do you notice the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, or boastful pride showing up most consistently?
  • Are there areas where you have been taking credit for what God has done?
Practical Application: Identify one specific worldly habit or pattern that has been pulling your attention away from God. Make a concrete plan to reduce or eliminate it this week, and replace that time with something that draws you closer to Him.
