Forgiven for His Namesake

Reading: 1 John 2:12 -- The assurance that sins are forgiven on account of Christ's name and character, not human merit.
Devotional: Forgiveness is not earned. It flows from who God is, not from what you have done or left undone. John writes to the whole congregation -- the mature, the young, the newly believing -- and reminds every one of them that their forgiveness rests entirely on the name and character of Christ. This means your worst failure cannot outrun His grace. Richard, a man covered in prison tattoos and years of regret, discovered this truth at a ministry table in Livingston, Texas. God did not wait for Richard to clean himself up. He sent ragtag, ordinary people to love him until the truth landed. Rest today in the fact that your forgiveness is secured not by your performance but by His name.
Reflection Questions:
  • Have you been trying to earn what God has already freely given?
  • Is there someone in your life you are withholding love from until they clean themselves up?
Practical Application: Write down one area of your life where guilt has lingered. Confess it plainly to God and remind yourself that His forgiveness is not conditional on your feelings about it.
