Joy That Cannot Be Taken
Reading: Philippians 4:4-7 — Paul urges believers to rejoice in the Lord always, to bring their requests to God with thanksgiving, and rests on the promise that the peace of God, which surpasses all human understanding, will guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Devotional: John states plainly that he is writing so that joy may be made complete. Not circumstantial happiness. Not the relief that comes when a problem is solved. Complete joy. The kind that exists even when the electric bill is too high, when the diagnosis is frightening, when the relationship is broken, and when the storm shows no sign of ending. This joy is not built on outcomes. It is built on the unchanging reality that you have a Savior who died for you, who rose for you, and who is coming back for you. When that truth is the foundation, nothing the world throws at you can fully collapse what you are standing on. That is what complete joy looks like.
Reflection Question: What have you been placing your joy in that is temporary, and how has that affected your peace during difficult seasons?
Practical Application: Identify one circumstance or relationship in which you have been seeking joy instead of bringing your joy from Christ into it. Pray specifically over that area today.
