The Root of Pride and the Freedom of Surrender

Reading: Isaiah 14:12-15; Jeremiah 17:5-8; Proverbs 16:18

Devotional: Pride did not originate with mankind. It originated in heaven with Lucifer, who declared "I will" five times in defiance of God. That same spirit of self-sufficiency entered the human heart in Genesis 3 and has been causing destruction ever since. Pastor Charlie spoke honestly about his own struggle with pride, acknowledging that self-reliance had brought him trouble throughout his life. Jeremiah draws a stark contrast: the person who trusts in their own strength is cursed, but the one who trusts in the Lord is blessed. Surrender is not weakness. It is the wisest and most courageous act a person can perform before God.

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you tend to say, "God, I have this," rather than, "God, I need you"?

Application: Spend five minutes in intentional silence today. Lay before God one area where you have been relying on your own strength. Speak the words aloud: "God, I cannot do this without you."
