Reading: Jeremiah 17:7-8

Devotional: Jeremiah 17:7-8 compares the person who trusts in God to a tree planted beside a river. Its roots reach the water, and when drought comes -- and the text makes clear that drought does come -- the tree does not panic. It does not wither. It keeps producing fruit because its roots have gone deep into a source that does not dry up. This is the picture of a spiritually hydrated life. The goal is not to avoid hard seasons. The goal is to be so deeply rooted in God's word, prayer, and community that when the hard season arrives, you are not swept away by it. You have been building something underground that no storm can see and no drought can touch. Stay planted. Keep drinking. The roots you grow in quiet seasons will hold you in the difficult ones.
