Grace That Cannot Be Earned

Reading: Ephesians 2:8-9 -- This passage describes salvation as a gift of God given through grace and received through faith, entirely apart from human effort or achievement, so that no person can claim credit for it.

Devotional: The woman who wept at Jesus' feet brought her most valuable possession and poured it out without any guarantee of return. She did not perform an act to earn forgiveness -- she responded to a grace she had already begun to believe was real. This is the order the gospel always follows. Grace comes first. Our response follows. No amount of religious observance, moral effort, or good behavior can produce what only God freely gives. Simon had Jesus at his table but had not received him into his heart. Receiving grace requires humility -- the willingness to admit that you cannot earn what you desperately need.

Reflection Question: Is there an area of your life where you are still trying to earn God's approval rather than simply receiving his grace?

Practical Application: Identify one way you have been performing for God rather than resting in him. Surrender that performance today and replace it with a simple prayer of gratitude for what has already been given.
