The Table Has No Velvet Rope

Reading: Matthew 5:43-48 — Jesus instructs his followers to love not only those who are easy to love, but also enemies and those who cause harm, reflecting the character of a Father whose grace falls on the righteous and unrighteous alike.
Devotional: It is easy to welcome people who look like us, speak like us, and carry the same burdens we have already worked through. It is far more difficult to welcome the person whose choices frustrate us, whose lifestyle unsettles us, or whose presence makes us uncomfortable. And yet Jesus makes clear that loving only the lovable requires no transformation at all. The tax collectors do that. The Gentiles do that. God's people are called to something higher and harder: a love that does not sort people before offering grace. The table Jesus sets has no velvet rope. Neither should ours.
Reflection Questions:
  • Who in your life have you quietly excluded from your circle of compassion?
  • What would it look like to actively extend welcome to that person this week?
Practical Application: Identify one person you have been avoiding or dismissing. Commit to one small act of genuine kindness toward them this week, not to fix them, but simply to see them the way Jesus does.
