Fasting - Emptied to Be Filled

Reading: Matthew 4:1-11; Matthew 6:16-18
Devotional: Jesus began His ministry with a forty-day fast, demonstrating that fasting prepares us for what God wants to do. Fasting isn't about proving our willpower; it's about creating space for God to fill us. When we intentionally set aside physical food, we develop spiritual hunger. Fasting removes the noise and clutter, allowing us to hear God's voice more clearly. It's a tool of surrender, discipline, and humility. Notice that Jesus said "when you fast," not "if you fast"—He expects it as part of our spiritual rhythm. This practice isn't legalistic obligation but loving pursuit. As you fast, don't advertise it or seek human approval. Fast secretly, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Reflection: What would it look like for me to fast with the right heart posture—not to get something from God, but to get more of God Himself?
