Rejecting Broken Cisterns
Reading: Jeremiah 2:4-13
Devotional:
God's indictment is heartbreaking: His people forsook the fountain of living water to dig their own broken cisterns. We commit this tragedy whenever we turn from Jesus—the only One who truly satisfies—to pursue lesser things. Perhaps you've become bored with Christ because you're trying to quench spiritual thirst with entertainment, achievement, comfort, or control. These are cisterns that hold no water. C.S. Lewis wrote that our desires aren't too strong, but too weak—we settle for mud pies when a vacation at the sea is offered. Where have you been "far too easily pleased"? What broken cistern are you digging instead of drinking from the Source? Today, confess your thirst to Jesus and return to the fountain. He alone satisfies.
