The Weight of a Forgiven Debt
Reading: Luke 7:41-43 -- Jesus tells a parable about two debtors, one owing a great sum and one owing far less, both of whom are completely forgiven by the lender. He then asks which debtor would love the lender more.
Devotional: Jesus used this parable to expose something Simon the Pharisee could not see in himself -- that minimizing your own sin leads to minimizing your gratitude. When we convince ourselves that we are mostly good people who have made only small mistakes, we rob ourselves of the deep joy that comes from understanding what forgiveness truly cost. The cross was not a small gesture. It was the death of God's own Son, paid equally for every person regardless of the size of their debt. Recognizing the full weight of what was forgiven produces a love that is difficult to contain.
Reflection Question: Do you tend to minimize your own sin? How might a fuller understanding of what you have been forgiven of change the way you love God and others?
Practical Application: Spend time today in honest prayer, acknowledging specific areas where you have fallen short. Allow yourself to sit in the reality of forgiveness rather than moving past it quickly.
