The Holy Spirit as Conviction

Reading: John 16:7-11; Romans 8:1
Devotional: There is an important difference between condemnation and conviction. Condemnation crushes -- it tells you that you are beyond repair, that you are defined by your worst moments, that there is no way forward. Conviction, on the other hand, is the quiet and persistent voice of the Holy Spirit pointing you back toward the path. It is uncomfortable precisely because it is true. When a pastor, a spouse, a friend, or a scripture passage stirs something uncomfortable in you, resist the urge to blame the messenger. Ask instead whether God is using that moment to call you back. He corrects those he loves.
Reflection: When was the last time you felt convicted rather than condemned? How did you respond?
Practical Application: Spend ten minutes in silence today. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one area of your life that needs surrender. Write down what comes to mind and pray over it.
